Malting news EU: Seaports shelter new malting capacities due to cost advantage for bulk shipments

During the past years new malting capacities came on stream almost exclusively in seaports, analysts commented July 03. Those maltings from Rouen through Antwerp, Ruisbroek, Eemshaven, Bremen, Hamburg and Thisted to Halmstad have a cost advantage for bulk shipments and will do a large part of the future export business in bulk in vessel.

Reason is that inland barley markets are not much or not at all lower than barley price CIF seaports. Of course, well-located inland maltings in Belgium, Holland, on the Baltic coast and along the Rhine are also in the running.

The cost of container transport to seaports and the container ocean freight are variable so that another segment of the industry is competitive in the container business, e.g. the British maltsters.
